Lady Teng was related to the Grand Master of Ceremonies, Teng Yin. However, Yin’s family was exterminated, and Lady Teng’s father was exiled since he was a distant relative. The reasons for the extermination and exile were tied to the succession crisis that occurred between Sun Quan’s children, but the family had some reprieve when Sun Xiu became emperor. They were given a general amnesty and Teng Mu was allowed to return, and Sun Hao would later take Lady Teng as a wife and consort. Later on, when Sun Hao ascended to the throne, he made her his empress. Sun Hao is hardly a beloved figure in the history of Wu, as he was the final emperor of the nation.
